Natural Muslin NFR, also -known as unbleached Muslin non flame retardant- is a plain, tightly woven fabric used for painted stage cycloramas, painted theater backdrops and scenery flats or for any other surface that is being used to reflect light on a stage. Natural Heavy Weight Muslin is ideal to bounce light off.
Unbleached Muslin can be painted and FR chemicals can be added to the paint, or the painted fabric can be sprayed with a FR chemical.
Because unbleached Muslin is available in wide widths, it can be sewn into seamless cycloramas and backdrops, avoiding the disruptions caused by horizontal or vertical seams.
Tip: It is recommended to use NFR Muslin when painting on a scenery flat or backdrop, since FR muslin is chemically treated to be flame retardant and the moisture in the paint may cause the FR chemical to leach to the surface causing fabric discoloration. Flame Retardant chemicals can be added to the paint, or the painted fabric can be sprayed with a FR chemical to comply with local fire codes.
Painting on the fabric may cause shrinkage. For that reason it is highly recommended that allowances are made to cover for any shrinkage caused during the painting process.
Additionally, we recommend the fabric is stretched and fastened to a frame prior to painting on it so to minimize shrinkage.
Notes: Since Unbleached Natural Muslin NFR is not pre-washed its width may vary a few inches.
